Mag Drive: Quieter in or out of water?

Hi all:

I have a Mag Drive 3 in my sump and I find it pretty noisy.  Are they quieter sitting out of the water?  Also, it is currently hooked up with rigid PVC tubing.  Would using flex tubing reduce vibration noise?

Thanks in advance.

old post, new reply.

Yes, the flex plumbing does help reduce the vibration and noise. You can also suspend the pump either inside or outside your sump.

Sorry to revive an old thread.

Sad to say that the Mag Drive 3 was very noisy, no matter what I tried.  I have replaced it with a Eheim Compact Plus 2000, and it is dead silent.

I'll keep the Mag Drive as a backup, but if they are all like that, I can't see why anyone would run that on any system...

Any chance there could be damaged or worn parts inside the pump? I run a MAG 9.5 in my sump, and like your new Eheim, it is dead silent. It's been running 24/7 for a year and a half.

That's a possibility, but it was (or looked anyway) brand new when I got it.  Maybe I just got a lemon!
