ovas.ca website changes

The forum may be a bit quirky for a little while today while I play with a few options.

Don't worry I shouldn't cause too many problems.

You should notice a few changes to ovas.ca now. 

www.ovas.ca now links to a new look homepage.  This was done to increase the visibility of the club's events.  To access the forum from our new homepage - follow the menu links under the ovas logo.

Some small forum changes/issues

• Clicking on "home" will bring you to our new homepage.
• Clicking on "logout" will bring you to our new homepage.
• Due to a bug in the forum software after you make a shout it will take you to the home page - I'm looking at this.

This new homepage is a work in progress, items will be added as time permits. 

If you find any errors, have any problems or just want to offer a suggestion either PM me or post in this thread.

Peter nice work! This does show case the club and the forum as just a part of it not all of it. This is a good change I think and will put the focus where it's wanted.

I am guessing not any time soon since the new front page is Word Press and the forum is SMF.  Unless he is good at making themes up fast!

Yes, the homepage is done with WordPress while the forum software is SMF.  The issue for the forum software upgrade is not the look of the forum, but rather the fact that we are running SMF 1.1 RC3 and the latest version of the software is SMF 1.1.11.  We have gone through at least four different web masters since the forum was introduced several years ago and I'm sure that each one of them (myself included) have put little PHP tweaks into the software.  Any attempt at an upgrade is going to take awhile and probably be rather painful.

From what I've seen on the SMF board, there is not even a reliable upgrade path from 1.1 RC3 to the current version.

On another note, that will be all the changes for awhile -I've got a week of sightseeing in Vienna coming up in a couple of days.

Maybe one day we could go with vBulletin a much superior app and more control. SMF is a pain to make changes to. The issue is there are so many hands in the pot at that end not just this end. Upgrades can be a disaster and kill everything almost exsisting. Of course a quick restore of a backup will return to the old configuration but still is all time and more time. This stuff is great when it works but that ani't always the case...

I really like the look of the new home page and the layout of the forums.

What I miss is the quick view that shows x number of the latest posts.  I found it really handy to glance at the window and quickly scan the list to see if there is anything new and interesting.

Maybe it's still there and I'm just too dense to figure it out.

Yes I realize that. But I liked the boxes that ran down the side of the homepage. I found it was nice and quick to see the recent activity. I can understand why it was removed though.

It's back but on the left hand side now - and fewer posts to conserve room.
