How well do the Rubbermaid garbage pails stand up to being filled with water? Do the tend to stretch and go pear-shaped?

I have one...it's older and dark brown on wheels and I haven't had any problem with it...BUT they are all different!! but so far no issue with any rubbermaid products (bins or pails)

John,

According to what I've read on RC, most use the Rubbermaid Brute cans without issue.  As an added bonus, the Brute cans are NSF certified for contact with food products.  They are are also expensive - HD is the only place that I've seen them locally.

The Rubbermaid Roughnecks are much cheaper and are available almost everywhere.  The downside is that they aren't NSF certified and they aren't as thick or rigid as the Brutes.  I've read of a few cases where they've split in the bottom, but only on the larger ones.  The 20G Roughnecks have a different bottom design and appear to be much more solid.

Preston hardware sells food-grade barrels for $20-$25, depending on the size.

I use the largest rubbermade bins for bleaching my rack. (insert snicker here)

Its been full litterally to the point of overflowing for 6 month now with no issues.
And I know several other people that have used there for RO water without any issues.
Not the cheapest but they work very well.

The industrial 50g barrels are a bit better on the sqr footage to volume ratio but when you get them used for oil or vinegar products they need a serious cleaning!

Agreed - I know of one as well and after over a year, no issue!!!

I bought the beigh ones from home depot, the ones with wheels. One leaked at the wheels. When I looked closer, all of them were very thin at the same location. I took them back and bought the expensive big ones, the brute ones.
