I need one to configure my SATABoy Storage Array.

I wonder if anyone in the area has one I could swing by and borrow it for a few hours?  Actually, once I reset the units IP I don't need it.

This is an impulse need... I have time today to work on this project so I figured I'd ask and see.

PS none to be found at my local stores yesterday...  I ordered one cause I want to have it around ... But it will be a few more weeks before i have time.

I have one sitting around just moved I will look for it in my bin of cables.

yes Dan!  I didn't mean to confuse...

I am configuring one of those SATABoy's from the pic...

I need the Null Cable to do it. (thanks, got PM) setting kids up will call.

At a future date/time I need to get 6 or 8 more of the drive-trays that hold the drives... I only have 6 or 8 and the unit takes 14 of them... I want to get the rest of the slots full of 1TB or 2TB drives and config them in RAID 5.

I will be building a SCSI link to my HTPC (the mac mini) to store all my media files.

i know you've found one to borrow, but should you need a null modem cable to keep, let me know i have a few left from my FTA box programming days, you can gladly have one of them.

I just finished setting up a 12tb raid 5 array.  Soo nice to have space for my movies :).
Bluray rips take up space!!

dan2x38

Are you ripping from a Blu-Ray on your PC guys? Thought about buying a Blu-Ray burner for my PC. My laptop plays Blu-Ray guess I could output to my PC as well?

you can rip blurays without a bluray burner.......from what ive read it takes quite a whiiiiile to rip them compress to mkv or something down to
8Gigs or so otherwise ur stuck witha  file over 20gigs i think.

JetJumper

Pirate is my friend for rips :)

OK cool... BTW I talk Geek... LOL

Like I said Bell would show at 4:50 when they say between 8-5... they showed up at 4:45 what a freakin' bunch...  >:(

How many HDD now? Size? What speed? Just curious how fast it access a large array like that. With the price of 1TB HDDs it is in within my grasp for a small array at least.

i setup a Windows Home server...(even though the entire house uses macs) but if you ahve a extra old computer laying around, it's the cheapest way to setup a media streaming/storage center for the house. i bought the software for i think 150$ or so and then just use any old HDD laying around (or better to buy new ones) and its setup for you. Been setup since 2007 with no glitches so far. the computer automatically shuts off at 3am and turns back on at 10am and all data is automatically duplicated for backup onto another drive (almost like a RAID setup except it uses some new format specific to WHS). look into it, i think WHS-2 is released or going to be very soon.

dan2x38

I'm an old network admin so still have server 2000 & 2003 laying around. I am not sure how large a drives it recognizes been along time since I worked in the field. Server 2000 if I remember recognizes RAID 5?

Guess we jack this thread? EH Hook-up?

Technically speaking the OS doesn't know about the raid implementation in the environment hookup is creating. All it sees is addressable disk space. Can't remember win2k limits off the top of my head since I don't have any customers that still use it (2TB rings a bell). Win2k3 can see up to 64TB using dynamic disks (up to 32 disks per group), depending on raid implementation.  Practically speaking the max you'd see is 62TB with raid 5 since one drive would be used for parity. It's dependent on controller bus, not the OS though.

Hookup, keep an eye on system health in that unit, rebuild time on a 12TB+ raid 5 implementation will not be pretty.  I know you aren't going for speed, but something to be aware of...
I haz reef tanks.
