Wind Damage?

So, what's broken with you?

At my home our new gazebo is broken, and two fences are at 30 degrees.  A neighbor's house lost lots of siding, and another neighbor's gazebo is ready to visit the city dump.  Electricity conked out a couple of times, but the fish are ok.  Crossing fingers that this concludes the worst of today.

Drive safe everyone.  Remember, wind gusts push moving cars.

Good luck to all of you.

Looks like we got lucky this time (at least, so far). I'm in NE Stittsville, and the worst we saw was travelling garbage cans and recycling bins. I have two new ones now. There's still one of unknown origin wedged under my car. The street was like an obstacle course, but no real damage. The whole thing seemed very localised, the kind of thing where one side of a street gets ravaged and the other gets nothing.

I got attacked by the garbage cans at work.  They started racing after me in the parking lot. haha!  other then that just 1 down spout on the house that I need to fix.

our roof facing is gone, will cost around 300$ to fix
our patio table shattered into million pieces, another 500$ there

with all that we were suppose to get a gazebo, my wife said huh huh, no more! lol

No damage here...but quite a bit of tree and fence damage in the neighbourhood. Lost power around 1pm and around 4pm they told us power would not be back on until 10pm SATURDAY. So finally bit the bullet and went out and bought the generator we had been putting off (I had been bailing the sump pump by hand for 4hrs at that point). Of course once I got the generator running and the sump pump, fridge and both tank's filters running power came on an hour later!......GRRRRRRRR  Not sure how the estimate goes from over 48hrs to actually being done in 4hrs....but hey....it's Hydro One.

About 10 sheets of shingles snapped off on my roof.  Thank God I don't have any exposed wood!  Many of my neighbors are not so lucky.  A fella down the street has 1/5 of one side of the roof exposed!  It's going to rain tonight and tomorrow so there's a good chance he'll have to deal with wet insulation and damaged ceilings on the top floor.

The roofers are coming tomorrow morning to fix our roof and it'll costs me around $400.

You should let your neighbour know that most insurance policies give the homeowner the right to 'temp' their damage by whatever means possible, as soon as possible. Basically, they would rather you don't wait for authorization, just get it temped to minimize further damage that they would have to pay for. They should be able to call whoever they want to mitigate the damage with no repercussions. Just speaking from experience and some knowledge of the disaster recovery business.

Ok thanks...  I'll run over to let them know asap...  I have a bad feeling that house insurance is going to go up next few years due to the number of claims.  Fixing a few shingles is one thing, but having water damage inside your home is just bad and expensive!

Please remember, I'm not a lawyer and not involved in the industry, but I believe my advice is sound.

I totally agreed with you :)  The way I look at it is this, either pay now or pay (much higher) later...

I wish them luck.

Hopefully, their only cost will be their deductible. Let us know how it turns out.

8 AM Friday, still no Hydro.
Went off at home around 1 yesterday afternoon.
3 Saltwater tanks.
No property damage, BUT...
We will see.

We have to cut down a 45 ft pine on the property that I work, but my concerns are for the trailer.  Not sure what I will walk into and I cant get there until next weekend as I am working this one.

Fingers crossed I still have one to go too.

Nerine

I was out driving in it! YUCK!! I had the wheel turned to the left just trying to drive in a straight line! Was driving fairly slow too on a side road!

Then had to speed up and play dodge the flying debris! garbage cans, chunks of tree, signs, it was nuts! Didn't loose any power in the area in Ottawa I was staying, but my friend was at work and she asked if I could come get her as they were out of power, took me an hour to drive what normally takes 10 minutes because of downed trees, wires and no lights!

I have some photos of their neighbours back yard, the shed was dumped over the fence, and it is a good sized shed! bbq, tables, chairs, everything went flying!

At our house...leaves in the pool was the worst that happened, but down the road a barn collapsed...quite the wind!!

There is so much damage!  I didn't think we had any damage but today our neighbour came over to tell us that a branch snapped off our maple tree and landed in their back yard.  Thankfully it just landed on the grass.  Other than that, we were lucky!  One of the teachers at the school down the road had an unpleasant surprise.  A tree snapped and fell directly on their car...pretty heavily from what the neighbours have told me.  I saw another house that had a large up-rooted tree leaning towards the house.  I haven't had the time to be nosy and go look more closely but there are quite a few people who have been cutting trees.

At my office we had the doors locked because the wind was starting to open them.  I'm sure if the door opened enough, it would have been bad.  The sign above the exterior was blowing really badly.  The wind would pick it up and then it would slam down on the building.  We thought for sure it was coming in the window at some point.

Saltcreep

Heading up to the cottage tomorrow to check on things. I'm sure there's a lot of deadfall since last weekend. Lots of trees around there.

Brent Shaver

I had been trying to get in touch with the trailer park and had sent an email but they were without phone for 72 hours and without power for about 36.  The good news is we suffered no damage and my trailer is surrounded by trees that are about 150 ft, I mean I am parked up against 2 of them.

Just glad the boat wasnt docked or I would have for sure had to have it lifted from the bottom.  Worse storm they have seen in over 20 years for wind..

Just lucky

Nerine

whew! glad no damage Brent!
