This seemed to work out well the last time I posted it, so here it is again. These prices come from the flyer. Availability may differ between stores (as such it's always a good idea to call ahead). I may do a typo here or there, so always reconfirm with the store on prices as they're not liable for my mistakes.

30% off all 'Cat It' brand cat toys.

20% off Hagen small bird cages.

I received a copy of this month's flyer in today's Ottawa Citizen (October 6th). If you need/want a copy of it, you'll have to visit a store location to obtain it. For store locations nearest you visit SuperPet.com.

Also... I know we in Barrhaven are having a bunch of 'in store' specials in order to clear out some of our tanks (on various Africans, some tetras, livebearers, large SA/CA cichlids, etc.) and once I can re-confirm exactly what these are and what prices they'll be I'll post them as well. If anyone from the other SP locations want to do this for their own store in this thread (or just make interesting new fish arrivals known) then go for it!

Cheers!

Quote from: "Pisidan"Whats wrong with ID Sharks??? Just curious!

If they are properly taken care of, they would outgrow all but the largest of tanks.  And since they should be a school... well you get the idea.. most people don't have 200+ gallons dedicated to id sharks.

They are a very abused fish... almost as bad as goldfish.

Thanks Mettle again for posting this out and you save us a lot on gas :> ... i have been waiting for Rummy Nose Tetra on sales for long time..finally here they come :>

Quote from: "jfox"How do the Amazon Swords look?

And pets shops should take this piece of advice...I think people shouldn't come on here and rant about improper fish care..blame the store for selling it..... especially BIG ALS-Innes Rd!    How often do you go in there and see several oversized fish in those tanks?  Some fish that couldn't turn themselves around in the tanks.

Quote:  most people don't have 200+ gallons dedicated to id sharks.

Petshops don't care as long as they make the buck!

I recall one time when Big Als was located on St.Laurant, they were selling Sturgeon fry.......according to my fish and game regulations, a Sturgeon is a fresh water game fish, and it's illegal to sell certain game fish in Canada.  Even if it was legal....an aquarium is no place for a Sturgeon!    On the mops site about 5 years ago, somoene was selling game fish for aquariums, and MNR investigated this.   About the same time, a Pirahna was too huge for the aquarium it was in, what did the person do???  They released it into Lake Simcoe in Barrie, ON.   The fish was found floating, and brought to MNR.....the pirahna died because Canadian waters was just a tad too cold for them.

Superpet-Merivale seems to have an overshipment tonight!   The tanks are over crowded in some tanks.   Hopefully they sell some before they start to die.

... and then there's the piranha / pacu that was found in the Rideau Canal in 1994: http://www.nature.ca/rideau/b/b2_2-e.html

#1 Most large fish u see in the tanks at BA Innes are trade ins, somebody brings in a large catfish or Oscar cuz they dont have room for it. What are we supposed to do, tell them no, leave it in ur even smaller tank indefinitely?
#2 We DO care. Like I said, we specifically did not order the id sharks, they were sent by accident. And we cant responsible for every time a customer buys something like a bala sharek and puts it into a 10 gal tank. We usually try to talk them out of it, but if they tell us they have a 55 gal, how do we know whether or not they're telling the truth?
#3 We have repeatedly turned away native game fish becuz we are not allowed to carry them. And there are sturgeon that stay a foot or less, and would be ok for a large tank.
#4 Don't mean to jack ur thread Mettle. Do u know what species te rummy-noses are?

Mettle

I agree with the ID Shark thing. I don't like seeing them in stores. But it's head office who makes the sales and quite often we have no choice but to carry what they put on sale... Hopefully they weren't auto-shipped, however, and we can avoid getting them in, period.

As for the species of the rummies - no idea Matt. Sorry.

And Sailfin - you're right. Despite the caring attitudes of many pet shop employees and their attempts to find animals good homes, the companies themselves have little regard for the animals they deal in. It is the pet industry for a reason. It is about making money, like any other company. That's the cruel reality of it all.

This spring, Big Als had 2 or 3 large pond koi in the tanks.   The poor fish were too long to turn around in the tanks.   They have an impressive pond in that store, they should of put them in there.  Or donate the fish.   There are several places where they have indoor ponds....i.e. The Casino in Hull.

mseguin

The pond generally is too shallow for giant koi. Not sure why, think it has something to do with the pump. Those fish were also trade ins, and we did sell them.

Mettle

Quote from: "Sailfin"Or donate the fish.   There are several places where they have indoor ponds....i.e. The Casino in Hull.

Places with these ponds and capabilities are over run with phone calls every year. Places like Little Rays and zoos and such get numerous inquiries as to whether or not they can take 'a single pacu' or 'a really nice koi' and so forth. It's not always that easy... At least by bringing them to a pet shop there's a chance that the fish can be re-sold and perhaps go somewhere suitable.

I mean, almost every shift I get an inquiry from someone if we're willing to take their oscar or something else. And we just can't. The room isn't there. We don't have the space. And as a result either the fish suffers or dies most often.

The best way to avoid this is to educate people about the fish they're buying and let them know what they're getting into. But that's not always the case with every place and so we just have to live with how things are.

If you haven't worked in a pet store I don't think you have a proper understanding of how this business works and how much these fish, and other animals, are treated like so many other commodities. It's easy to take a high moral stand point - but it's not realistic.

Just my two cents on the matter...

mseguin

I agree. If we let them, we would probably have about 100 people bringing in their koi and goldfish this winter, but we've had to tell them we just dont have the room for them.
Anyway, the point is, its not Mettle\s fault that Superpet has ID sharks, but it is your fault if you buy one and put it in a 10 gal tank.

TBarb

I thought that with certain measures that you can put these type of cold water fish in insulated ponds (underground, covered top with good water circulateion) during the winter season.

Am I off on this assumption?

mseguin

It\s possible, but most people want to go to the trouble. (Back to the problem being with the custoemrs)
