Here is an new interesting fact about the UPS Store in Ogdensburg NY. I'm sure that many of you are aware that we can get stuff ship from the US to the UPS store in Ogdensburg NY. I'm also confident to say that you are all aware of the 5$ fee per package per week ! Now here is an interesting way to save $$$ If a bunch of us get togother an lease a box for 12 months we get an extra 3 months for free ! The cost for the box is around 350$ for 15 months...devided by X member of the club that would like to join we can end up with 10-20$ a year for unlimited box shipping and no extra fees for the extra week the package sits there. The other advantage is that other members going down can bring your box back saving the extra trip. Finally Qc resident will only pay GST at the custom office in prescott when crossing over.

Anyone interested just let me know....we could get togheter and put something up togerther in the club ?

why not just ship to your door??
clear the package yourself and then you don't pay duty fee's?
do some homework and you'll find a nice little legal secrete that UPS loves to hide...called partial self clearing.
PM if you want details on this. I have it nailed down to completely avoid the duty on my packages.

I always check out the local LFS first before I have to special order from the USA.
Keep up the local support boys/girls...otherwise our local shops will disappear.

I think however the point of having it shipped to a US Location is that many places in the US will provide FREE shipping with in US.  Once it hits that Canadian Boarder, BOOM the shipping is sometimes RETARDED!

True...you get nailed once you go over the boarder with UPS canada fee's.
Nothing that they can do with that.

that link is where I started doing homework...after talking to boarder patrol I got it all cleared up.  I even educated the UPS staff in billing to know how to do their job.  They confirmed with the gov and this method now works.

mmaisonneuve

True that you can act has your own broker but still...the shipping charge to canada are sometime crazy stupid....and there is also some places that will simply not ship to Canada ! Finally there is always those oversize package the do not travel across the border......like tires, sofas and large fish tank.

Another great spot is the Corporate Center in Ogdensburg. It's located right after you cross the bridge. They only charge $4 per box and I find that they are better organized.

pay the $5/pkg, its not a big deal after the 2hr driving(total), going through US customs, paying taxes to Canadian customs, bridge toll(twice $3-5), wear and tear on your car. 2 hr of your time, dealing with customs twice, $5 is not bad. I would rather pay the bs ups clearing fee and get it shipped to my door,  you can get your windsheild cracked from rocks flying off truck tires in front of you(happend to me) or worse you can hit a moose(happened to someone I know) all from going to the UPS store in ogdenseburgh.

once or twice is fine, but its not CHEAPER in the end.

Ive bought a few things from the US... nothing fish related.. all fishing related... and it never works out to *big savings*...

There are a few things I have my eyes on... like some fishing reels....   Lebaron sells theirs for $197+tax and I can get it shipped to the burg for $170USD all in...

For just about everything else i've not seen the savings... but i'm probably buying the wrong stuff.

If i replace a car, I will be looking south of the border though.  Too many people saving thousands and thousands... just gotta stay away from honda and other warranty voided if not bought in Canada cars.

BTW, the one fish related thing i bought was screen netting... cost me $46 for $5 of product shipped to my door... (office actually)...

If you're selective about when you use that method, it certainly can be.  I've had a single item shipped where the shipping cost difference was about $150 - about $15 more for international shipping, and $135 to UPS's brokerage (plus about $200 difference in retail cost between Canada and the US).

But that's why you get things shipped USPS from the US if at all possible.

I've gotta disagree on that one. You can save a fortune shopping in the states depending on what it is. I recently got some new hockey equipment that was almost half the price it was here. I got car tires for my wife's car at less than half price and when I set up my aquarium 4yrs ago I found my lights in the states for almost half price.

Not everything is a great deal....but there are definitely deals to be had. Everything I consider buying now I check prices in the States before making the purchase.

I think you misunderstood, shopping in US yes,  but shipping to US and drive to pickup, NO.

Ah sorry....again sometimes it is worth going to pick it up. If a company is going to charge me $100 to ship to Canada but the shipping to Ogdensburg is only $15....I'll gladly make that drive. Might cost me $15 in gas plus $5.50 in bridge tolls....but still cheaper in my books.

true, sometimes just the driving alone on a nice day is never a bad thing, plus you can go shopping at walmart there, thomas tank engines were cheaper there. But I still would not do that more than twice a year max, and I will gladly pay that $5/box each time at the ups store.

but very worth it if you are buying tires(exp low profile), I must say. sometimes that ups store looks like a tire store.

oooh, guess I'm gonna have to go, saw the Thomas the Tank engine comment ;)

I buy my books in the USA all the time...shipping to here would cost me sometimes upwards of $20 for a $2 used book...so I just have it shipped to my sister in the states, she packs them all in a flat rate box and pops it off to me for $25 with a bunch of other stuff I've ordered online!! :)

Ordered my husband's hockey skates...they were super expensive and paid $175 in fed ex fees, but it still came out cheaper buying them in the usa and then having my sister mail them up to us (the company didn't ship to canada which was funny cuz their product was shipped from a warehouse outside of Toronto...figure that one out)

I miss the states :P I've been locked to Canada for a bit and am anxious for the day I can start shopping there again LOL I still support local farmers (paid $20 for a flat of berries yesterday and almost died at the small amount, but hey I'm supporting local...and going broke from it) For me it's not really about the items being 'cheaper' my husband ebays items all the time from other countries because it's cheaper than Canada...gets $150 shirts for $20 with shipping... for me it's about the variety of items available in the USA that are NOT here yet :)

If you make a day out of it, it's a good trip! but don't go for one or two items alone...and don't bring back a ton (by that I mean around 50) of snakes, customs doesn't like that...especially if they are afraid of snakes!

I would prefer to purchase things in Canada....but we are getting absolutely gouged on certain things when there is no need for it. There is no reason at all that we pay more for books that in the US.....last I checked we have plenty of paper.  The hockey equipment I purchased in the States was ridiculously lowered priced. For example the helmet I bought was $199 up here and $94 down there. The worst part is when I got it home it had a made in Canada sticker on it. So they're making them here, shipping them to the States and obviously still making a profit at $94.....so how much profit are they making when they sell it up here!

Yes good old NAFTA... really helped us didn't it? Our dollar is at or near par and we still pay more than twice for items there as here... just another kick in the pants and we let it happen to us. Reason it is cheaper there - they do not let themselves get push around. We are know Worldwide to just shrug it off when we kicked in the you know what then we just say, "Please Sir may I have another?"

I've bid & won any number of items on ebay, had them shipped to UPS Store - both Ogdensberg & in Montana, before I moved - and saved mucho $$.
Many sellers do not ship to Canada, so if you want an item, you need to get creative.

I've got everything from skimmers & overflows to bicycle saddles. If you can plan it and get a few items to arrive within a week of each other, then the savings are multiplied.

This was easier between BC & Montana, I was only 15mins to the US border over there. From here, it is nice to make a roadtrip out of it - but I don't think I'd do it this weekend, might be a bit busy south of the border :)
