How's everyone surviving this one? Hope nobody loses power for any length of time. This one was worse for us, but we do have power. Our backyard is a tree graveyard though. It's very depressing. It would have been nice if Environment Canada could better predict this crazy stuff. They called for 20km/h winds just minutes before the wind must of went over 100km/h. We watched some huge trees go down in the back yard, and for a a few seconds it looked like we were going to hit full hurricane.

Hope everyone's is okay. This is sure getting more frequent. Shame on the governments of the world for ignoring this dramatic climate change. This is only going to get worse if we keep ignoring it.

Darth

yeah we lost power for a bit, and I agree it's a tradgedy, but blaming the governments of the world, now isn't that a stretch, let's point the blame where it belongs to the people The government does not make us destroy the planet, it's the people that do. But on another note these freak storms are nuts, but glad my power is back on

NanoSF

How is that a stretch? If the government made the rules the people would follow them, but it would cost these governments too much money so they don't. The governments are short term thinkers because that's all that matters to them. No government is willing to look the the future and spend the money now.

It would be easy to convert the entire world to renewable source of energy if they really wanted to but oil is giant business. The people can't stop this, only governments can. Renewable energy would be cleaner and cheaper in the long run so of course the people would want it. It's up to the governments to make these changes.

Think about it once we have full renewable energy sources it basically become free energy forever. The people are forced to use oil based energy for the most part, but obviously the people would not choose to do so if there was better options.

It has been said that filling the Mojave with Solar panels would produce enough energy to meet the entire energy needs of the United States.  Now obviously they would not do this but it shows it is possible and not really a pipe dream at all. Combine all the different renewable sources of energy and you could definitely provide the worlds power in a renewable way.

We lost our power for a short time. But a tree up street split in two. I pulled out my buck saw and went to help the neighbours cut up and move the tree it was blocking the end of our street. A large elm right beside us has a huge limb broken off but it is stuck in the branch below it. This thing will let go hope they get it dealt with since it is their tree and parking spot... good luck to them nothing I do to help... :(

PS - I am starting to feel pretty guilty about my power usage which includes a reasonably sized reef tank! :(

lets be real if people followed rules our prisons would be empty, and you are talking about power only, lets talk about aresol cans emissions and every other polutant out there. I just don't see how you can blame the government when recycling anything starts with one person, making it a rule, is just going to cause people to rebel against it, I am not gonna argue this point anymore because it will be an endless debate, so I will bow out thanks

NanoSF

It's not rules for the people to follow I'm talking about, it is systems in place that use and create renewable power sources. Aerosol is nothing compared to carbon emissions from fossil fuels. We are talking way more than half of all pollution is from the burning of fossil fuels. 85% of the worlds energy comes from fossil fuel burning. It not like I am saying the government should make it illegal to use fossil fuels, they should just make it desirable to use renewable sources. Are you seriously arguing that the government couldn't change the use of fossil fuels because people don't recycle or follow laws. It has nothing to do with criminal laws, just put money into developing renewable energy. People will use it if it is desirable. Then people like Dan won't feel guilty using electricity.  :)

Do you know that the ozone layer of the county of Nicaragua is damaged from the cattle? The methane gas from released has damaged the ozone there. It is one of the largest beef producers in the world. A large percentage of out hamburgers and hamburger meat in North America comes from Nicaragua beef particularly beef shanks. I use to be a butcher learned a few wild statics. It is the people eating all that beef that creates the demand. If people ate less process hamburgers there would be just that much more ozone to protect our plant... who would think eating MacDonalds would create more cow farts and that would damage our world's oceans in turn creating world climate change from polar ice cap melt down?

I was outside resealing a tank then all of a sudden the sky got dark and the wind come out of no where.  Had to rush and move everything inside before the rain hit.  Got hit with a couple of twigs and watched a tall tree snap and crack in front of my eyes.. Kinda Interesting! I don't think anyone really predicted this weather.  I don't hold it against anyone.  Haven't really paid attention to the weather network for a while now since 90% of the time they are incorrect.. haha.

Lack of recycling has no bearing on our climate.  It takes as much energy to recycle used products as it does to manufacture new ones.  We need to reduce the amount of products we consume in order to help the environment.  First fossil fuels caused "global warming" now they're causing the ice caps to melt?  That's asinine!!  It's not about eliminating using fossil fuels it is about being more efficient to consume less. We can use geo thermal heating units for our houses, solar panels, We can buy local veggies and fruit, we can reuse more items instead of just buying new ones. Why would we possibly blame the government when we ALL have options to help the environment readily available to us?  Most of us are just too lazy to change.  And as for McDonald's...well...that's just gross!

dan2x38

Hate to say it but actually the weather man or weather person... is correct 85% of the time.

Yeah this storm no one predicted. We went out it was sunny and nice out... 30 minutes later we were visiting someone had to rush out the storm started. When we drove home we dodged those covers over street lights at several intersections. It was dark out so weird how 30 minutes to changed so fast and no weather network or news gave warnings!

Crazy and came out of nowhere! I rushed and brought all of my trees inside in about 3 minutes and got a mouth and eye full of dirt in the process. I think I got everything in in time...

Everyone play nice here or its getting shut down :)

there was a sever thunderstorm warning in effect an hour before the storm and they where predicting 80-100kph winds

i was looking to see if a doggy walk was in my future and i decided to stay in, good idea...

A few trees down here.  We were out driving when it started. Sky was dark and then poof.  High winds started.  Trees along riverside near bank were breaking limbs and even a couple good sized trees broke. Heading for home had to make a detour as tree across the road and on top of a car. Before getting home (3 mins) had to go around another large tree down. Still no power at the house.

Ran a extension cord for the weed eater out to the van. Have one of those inverters in it to convert to a household plug. Starting the van every now and then and switching between the different tanks to run a powerhead/heater for awhile. Looks like it's going to be a long night.  Good thing for iPhone at least I have something to keep me busy.

I dunno about you guys, but we knew the storm was coming and nobody had been online all day to check the weather network!!! And it WAS predicted....There was a warning for chance of scattered severe t-storms...just nobody paid attention ;)

We have a barometer and it shot up right away and we knew that a storm was coming! and low and behold, looked outside and could see the clouds gathering! :) Had enough time to get everything inside and then we all sat outside and had tea while the kids ran around shouting "DID YOU SEE THAT!?" as branches fell and lightning stuck in the distance....BTW- we waited until the major gusts stopped before letting the kiddies outside ;) Though it was real hard keeping them inside, we are producing mini storm chasers :D

So get a barometer and you will know when a storm is coming!! very handy tool to have :)

Thankfully NO TREES CAME DOWN THIS TIME!!!!!! The guy at the dump knows us by name :P and the tree guy doesn't even wait for us to phone, he just drops in, that's how bad it's been with trees these past few storms...

Nano - sorry to hear about your tree loss, I feel your pain!!! that's all we've done this summer is haul away downed trees...

Thanks this is a good idea if it comes down to serious outage. We have one of those inverts for the car. Hate to use the gas and create larger carbon footprint but this idea might just save a s/w tank.

As for trees learned last night from a neighbour while we were clearing a downed tree that trees 3 meters from edge of the sidewalk are City trees. if you contact 311 and report the damage they will remove, trim and/or repair these trees. We have several trees that are partly dead and create a huge mess when it storms and even during normal times with it's dead leaves and dried out branches. So I am placing our call but they must have a damn long list so be sometime I suspect before they will get around to lesser issues then the downed and damaged trees.

It was a pretty crazy storm last night. Surprisingly I didn't lose power once, and I live in Kanata. We lose power when 5 people turn on their central air. I didn't notice any trees down in my neighbourhood either.

For those that haven't heard, the stage at Bluesfest collapsed because of the storm.

Wow!  I missed the entire thing while we were watching Harry Potter last night!  I came out of the theater and saw that it had rained :)

Thunda

We are around heron and bank.  We just got power back on.. was out since around 8 last night.  Still some trees down over the roads around here, mostly on side streets.  Guess they are saying it was funnel clouds so could be really hit and miss in area's.  Well the 2 saltwater tanks seem to have survived the excitement.  Guess it was worthwhile running things off the inverter.

As for gas/carbon from running the van.  We would only run it for 1 min every hour.  Was enough so that it didn't drain the battery and was enough to keep basic power to both fish tanks.  So all in all I would say aprox 14 min run time on the van.

I am up in Chelsea and my power has been out since 7pm last night. But the tank is currently on my generator (Flow is on but no lights & Heat) I called them up and they said power should be back by 3pm today.
