trickle system

What is a trickle system, and what does it do??  I'm told that it will replace lost water due to evaporation etc.   But from reading online straight from manufacturers sites that it is more of an elaborate filter system.  What are the benefits?  And why is it more likely to be required on a salt water tank than a fresh water tank??
