My 100 gal sprung a leak last night. Does anyone have any experience/knowledge about repairing a seam in such a large tank? It's also an old tank, more than15 yrs so i think the failing seams are a result of the glass bowing. It's about 6 inches from the top and there is definitely damage extending down to the bottom.

i would just seal over that seam with a new coat of sylicone , thats what i did when my 77 leaked and its been good for 3 years now

Marx

i peeled most of the sealent from inside corner and then resealed my 125g.. it held water ever since..

Beardy

ut for someone who isnt experienced it could be a bit scary lol , 100g of water is alot

ophelia

i have to say i'm hestitant about resealing because the seams along the bottom could be compromised. what is it exactly that holds the tank together? i feel like this small leak is an omen and that if i ignore it the whole tank will blow... lol

Beardy

ive seen it happen , if you want to rid of it let me know i will reseal it and be glad to use it

Mettle

I've heard that generally when resealing because of age it's best to reseal everything. Because why bother just doing the top corner if the bottom corner is going to spring a leak in a few months, weeks or even days? But tearing down a 100 gallon tank can be quite tedius.

Having thought about my situation and seeing the price of a new tank my feeling is to say goodbye to the old tank.  Does anyone want to take it off my hands?

BigDaddy

I'll take it Jackie.  Donating it, or do I need to make an offer

ophelia

Hey BD,

Thanks for the offer! I'm not sure that this tank has any value but I could put it up for sale and see what happens even if it just sells for $10. However, if you want it I could give it to you in exchange for your help. I suppose you'd have the means to take it away? Would you be willing to help with the delivery of the new one? I can arrange for another big, burly guy or two to carry. No stairs involved, well, maybe three. Would that be reasonable?

rockgarden

I'll up BD's offer (if he made one) to $20 and if you need a top for a tank I can include a real nice one that Nelson just painted black :)

Ron

ophelia

Ron, does that mean you'd give me $20 AND help with delivery? You see the big, burly guy with a truck for an hour is actually more what i want than the cash. All big, burly guys step forward if you want a free tank....

rockgarden

Not a problem.  I would force one of my sons to help me and bring the van.  Now, as follow up to Pegasus's earlier post it would be nice if your avatar said which part of Canada/NRC you live in - couldn't resist helping Michel in his quest :)

I can certainly help with the new tank.  I'm sure it'll fit in my truck with the seats out.

rockgarden

Now you have two big burley guys offering to help out.  One slightly older than the other :).

Any time is okay with me.

seems to be the only message in this thread that makes sence      I've done a number of old tanks....resealed it all, and all looks new again and are 100% safe.   One would think that the silicon would begin to strip where old meets new and you'd have the same problem again. :?

ophelia

Golly, two big, burly guys fighting over a tank. To be fair i should offer it to BD since he inquired first or you two could duke it out. Alternatively, i could entertain financial offers in addition to the help. Awwww, you're both gentlemen for offering the physical help. Would you guys like to sort it yourself who takes it or do you want the lady to decide?
I'm in the Alta Vista area.

Mettle

How about I get it since I'm the only one who made a reasonable suggestion on how to fix it? I wouldn't need to reseal it though. It'd be for my beardie.  :D  Problem solved!

What are the dimensions out of curiousity?

ophelia

Ahhh, a third contender. Are you also offering pick up and delivery?

BigDaddy

Sorry boys... executives get first dibs
