Anyone here uses that product to do water changes?

I was wondering if the syphon it creates (using the faucet) is powerful enough to drain water from the basement to my main floor? Unfortunately I don't have a faucet/water room in the basement, only on the two upper floors and one of my 3 tanks is in the basement.

Would make WC a breeze... right now it's syphon and bucket (a royal PITA).

Thanks!

Somehow, I really doubt it has that kind of suction power.

You will probably have to use a pump.

If you were siphoning from upstairs to downstairs, it wouldn't be a problem, but I don't see it happening vice versa.  Once you raise the output end of the siphon tube above the intake the water stops flowing. Do you have a drain in the floor in your basement?

The python isn't a gravity siphon, so it can actually siphon "up hill".  I just don't think it can manage a significant difference in height.

Yep, I do have a drain but it's at the opposite end of the house (where the heater, AC and water heater are). So I'd have to buy extra long tubing anyways (and plan to do so) but If I was going to buy a good length of tubing, I wanted to see if the Python could help.

Probably will be cheaper in the end though, all I need now is an adapter and a garden hose and I can fill the tank no problem. I'll empty it straight in to the drain.

Thanks for all the input.

Yeah, that's what I read about it. The water from the faucet creates the syphon so not just gravity. My worry was wether or not it was enough juice to go up a flight of stairs  :)

You can get a faucet adaptor for a garden hose at Canadian Tire.

I'll check it out, thanks.

What kind of filter do you have on the tank?  I used an ehiem spray bar fitting as an adapter on my outflow of my Fluval 405 when I was running over the top filtration on my previous tank and used the power of the outflow to get water out of my tank.  Not sure if it would work for an uphill run though in the long run since its not what the filter was designed to do.

In terms of length of your run to the drain in the floor: you don't need to use python type hoses to go the whole length of it, even a garden hose spliced to a short run python will work, you just need to get the flow going over the top of the tank to get the water running...
I haz reef tanks.

The tank in my basement is running an AC 50/200 so I probably can't MacGyver it to drain water out. Regular syphon to garden hose to floor drain is the way to go I think. Thanks for your input.

I use a python, and the amount of water you'd have to run to create that suction would be redonkulous.  Not to mention that you'd be standing in the basement paranoid that a fitting shifted as you carried the hose downstairs, and is now spraying water all over your kitchen (happened to me) or that the combination of your faucet on full blast PLUS the water coming out of the tank is about to overflow your sink (almost happened to me). SO I  just use my Python as a gravity siphon to drain into my yard, and then hook it to the tap to fill.

The Keep It Stupid Simple principle holds true here for me.  (in my case, it's actually the "keep it simple, stupid" principle.)

Also replaced as many of the plastic fittings with metal as I could at the local Home depot.

Alright, I'm convinced  :)
