Used fluval when i got my first cannister(204), what a pain ,got my first eheim 2213 used( still have it) & now several eheims later will never go to a fluval , can`t comment on the newer digital ones or the FX series.

I have five eheims (2217, 2217, 2213, 2026, 2232) and they're all very easy to start even the one without primers. Begin filling the canister fully, to the point where when you put the lid on a bit spills out. Fill the hoses, I stick them in the tank itself and get all the air out, close the valves, then connect the lines (keep the valves closed). Then just before pluggin it in, open the valves. Usually start instantly. Sometimes they need a few minutes but they will start. No water sucking (no swallowing pathogens).  It's like the concept of using a python. Fluvals are a far inferior product.

And the winner is ... Eheim.

Priming on the Classic series is very easy: open the double-tap quick-connect in the return path (motor side) give it a little suck, and you can see the canister filling with water. Once almost full, best when you see the water coming up the hose, put it back together and the remain air will leave the canister. Pretty straightforward I find.

I use two Fluvals 304, and I try not to touch them too much. The priming thing worked great in the beginning, but after only a few years of operation, it won't, it leaks, makes noise, all sorts of issues. Eheim's however just run as well as on the first day.
