Hi.  A friend recommended this forum to me. I'm a newbie to reef keeping and this site.  So, i thought i would say hello by starting a discussion on "vodka dosing."  My apologies if this has been brought up often before.  Otherwise, i would like to hear peoples thoughts, with their own experiences with this practice.

JetJumper

welcome!  Love the name ;)

Welcome to the forums.

Vodka dosing has been discussed here many times. Just do a search. I've used it with great success to get rid of cyano in the past.  I don't dose regularly though with vodka. Only when and if necessary. I've only had to dose twice for cyano outbreaks in 2 1/2 years of being in salt.

Hi JetJumper.  I'm glad you like the name.  i know i do.    I will search what others have mentioned.  Thanks, Dakotamay.

Welcome to the forum!  I'd make sure you do a ton of research before dumping vodka in your tank!  Lots of great info on here about it!

Will do.  Have been doing a ton of research.  Also read a bunch on this site.  My local lps is telling me to have patience.  I think he is right.  Thanks for the warning.

Thanks.  I hear Bio pellets are the way to go.  All the benefits of carbon dosing without the worry.  I'm thinking of buying a reactor for this to put in my sump too.  But only still thinking about it.  Yet to be decided.

We tried bio pellets. Don't really have a good or bad review of them. The pellets kept clumping up on us so we just gave up on having them.

Thanks Jim.  Agreed.  For every pro i seem to find someone mentioning a con.  Its hard to determine what is what.  That's why its great having people such as yourself willing to help out.

You know, i was talking to Don at Crazy 4 Coral in Kingston, and he mentioned that very same issue today.  He said he found away around that (i think a certain type of reactor) and hasn't had any major issues since.  I would suggest talking to him.  He seems to know what he is talking about.  He may have some suggestions for you.

Hey Don.  I'm glad i joined too.  Seems like a wonderful bunch of fellow hobbyists.  Hopefully, between research, you and everyone here, i can keep my reef inhabitants very happy.

Welcome to OVAS! Not much experience with vodka dosing here. I prefer a good scotch (but not for the tank!)

Chubs.  I like your humour.  Cheers to that.  I won't argue there, nothing like a good dry scotch.

Élan. Ur very Welcome.

If u are thinking of pellets. Any reactor will work. But if your going with more than 1 bag.You can't beat the Octopus pellet reactor.

dakrazyone

The CAD lights reactor looks very promising because of it's 3-way gate valve.  Having the flexibility to tune the rate of flow leaving the reactor, while keeping the pellets tumbling is a greate feature IMO.

Good to know.  Nothing is ever easy in this hobby is it.  Thank you, both for the information.
