UGH...Blue-Green Algae (aka cyano bacteria) :(

Now I get to add this to my list of algaes to conquer   Totally my fault.  I've been neglecting my routine for 2 weeks.

I found a 2" diameter patch of it on the plants that have been floating in my tank for a while, waiting for me to have an afternoon like this one to plant them.  I threw out the plants that had it and planted the rest, increased circulation of water in my tank just in case a bit escaped me, cleaned my filter and did a 50% water change.  Now, when I clean my filter, I rinse the bio media in conditioned tap water and hose out the sponges.  I still have lots of the good bacteria left.

Other than EM tabs, has anyone had any success with any other method of getting rid of the stuff?

SNAILS I had ramshorns in mine and they went to town on them. Otos and shrimps too maybe?

I would only use the EM treatment as a very last resort - i cant kill your bio filter.
I have used the clean as much as you can followed by some nitrate dosing( if your Nitrate levels are low) & bl
ack out.

In my experience, addressing low nitrates and circulation are the best approaches.

Have 1 oto cat and 2 zebra snail and now all the BG algae are gone on my tank.. zebra snail is a glutton for algae!

Well, if it comes back, I'll look into the snails.  I do have a zebra snail in another tank.  The fish in the BG algae tank are a bit rough for that little guy though. 

For now, the removal of the plant that it was attached to AND the increased circulation seem to be doing the trick.  I can't see it anywhere.  This stuff comes back with a vengeance too...I've seen it happen to someone's tank. 

I'll do a water change on Thursday and if I'm still clear by Sunday, can I consider it gone?

cant say its gone if no one is eating it.... and there will be always nitrates on your tank, is it near the window where strong sunlight gets in? sunlight is usually the cause of BG.
