Want to try my hands with Africans. I'm just unsure if it should be with my current "limited equipment" or wait, save and go bigger :-)

For sure save and go bigger...as big as your spouse will tolerate :p 

Africans have aggression issues if the aggression is not well managed with lots of space and hiding places for them to create territories.   This is the #1 reason why I have not tried them myself in over 20 years of fish keeping.
