I was in Toronto over the weekend and stumble upon a new strain of Angelfish. A local angelfish breeder had came up with these guy. I find them neat and nice but some might think other wise. They are called Black Tip Angel. They have long Anal fin and Dorsal fin. Through selected breeding he manage to completely remove the Ventral Fins(Pelvic Fins) The tip of both anal and dorsal fin carry a nice black edge hence the name Black Tip Angel. I can`t wait for these guy to reach adulthood and admire them.

I tend to agree, something is missing...
be aware of the green side

I'm just wondering why someone would want to eliminate the ventral fins of an angelfish?
THis must definitely affect the fish's ability to maneuver. Also, there's nothing more attractive than a wild angelfish with long and healthy ventral fins.

It actually does not affect the fish ability to maneuver at all. They move around just like normal angel. Maybe they are trying to make them look like bat fish. These are cross with smokey and blue. Fish like this is not for everyone. I have seen there sibling and some still have there ventral fin but only on one side. The parent does not have there ventral fins. I`m just waiting for these guy to be fully grown to see the color, shape and pattern they will have.

Ventral fins are used by fish to move up and down vertically, to make sharp turns and to stop quickly. This is especially true for discus, angelfish, and other flat-bodied fish.

You got it mistake. Your thinking of the Pectoral Fin. Here is a pic for more clear understanding

Hi Shawn, I was talking about the ventral, not pectoral. Another name for ventral is the pelvic fin. Here is a very interesting research article about the function of the pelvic fin in fish. http://jeb.biologists.org/content/15/1/32.abstract

I have stumble on that article before. Yes it does play a role but fish can still swim perfectly normal with out it. In quarantine they are swimming just like all of my other nothing different. I'm sure the breeder would not keep a line that would harm or affect the fish in anyway. It's a preference of choice really some line are more acceptable then others I guess. I like the ventral fin it does look nice but seeing it without it also bring a different aspect.

anything new always looks weird... maybe with a good lighting and surrounding the fish could look very stunning.

Interesting but weird and personally I love the long ventral fins on Angelfish. In fact for me that's what defines an angel.
Funny sometimes when visiting lfs you'd see angelfish with one missing  ventral or one shorter than the other and I always walked away and didn't buy.
Just my take on it. :)

At first glance, something about those fish made me think of the Oscar worthy movie, Piranha 3D... (and Piranha 3DD)  I'm not sure why it reminded me of this "fish"...  Perhaps it's just the mutation of a missing fin?  Either way - creeeepy.
