Looks like an asteroid the size of an olympic swimming pool will be passing between us and the moon today.  It's actually going to be passing on the INSIDE of the satellite belt, which makes it pretty likely to take out something... GPS, communications... FOX News....

It's overcast and daytime, so there won't be any way for us to see it zip by...  But in Europe, where it's going to be night time - if they know where to look at exactly the right time - they will see a tiny dot pass by.  Exciting. :)

And yes - there were just meteors that hit Russia today, injuring 500-700 people by blowing a roof off a building and shattering windows with sonic booms.  CNN blames global warming. :)

Sad for Russia , seen it on the news.
Those lucky enough to see the next one passing in or through the satellite belt will be greeted by a very bright sky wish we could see it.

The video of this happening is crazy spectacular!
We were just talking about the last one that hit Russia years ago
around the dinner table last night, what a coincidence.

what a coincidence.

Is it?  IS it??  :)  I have found that type of thing happening to me more and more lately.  For instance - out of the blue, I said to the wife "man, I wish they'd do another Joe Schmo Show... That show was awesome..."  Next day, flipping through the channels - Joe Schmo premier was on Spike TV.

I've also been having a lot of deja vu lately.  I think we're evolving - and just don't realize it yet...

Anyways... I'm seeing conflicting reports on the time that this asteroid will pass...  Some sites said 2:24PM EST, others say 6:30 PM (ish)...  There are live feeds being set up between NASA and SLOOH to watch it pass by. There's already one feed up from Australia showing the dot moving past stars.  Pretty cool stuff.

the one that went over Russia isn't DA14 or related to it! it was a completely different asteroid. DA14 is the one happening today at 2:25 pm EST (19:25 UTC)

and unless you are skilled with the telescope you won't be able to track this one :((( it's going too fast for the backyard observer!

But very cool :D I am not sure if I'll be able to catch this one, I'm headed off to school shortly!!!

Everyone who drives in Russia has a camera rolling at all times... Or at least that's how it seems if you spend any time on the College Humor website.  There's always crazy Russian driving videos being posted.

Although the Russia meteor strike(s?) are not part of DA14, I have a feeling that there's going to be a steady stream of debris in front of, and behind DA14.  I saw Armageddon... :)

Here's a video of the Russia stuff, to save the searches..

It looks like its path will be from south to north right over Africa and Europe.  I'll be watching the live stream to see what it takes out in its path through satellites!

hehehe

I agree...Everyone in Russia seems to have a video camera on the dash...I think I should be doing that now :P where's my camera???

Well that was anti-climatic...  It had a clean run through the satellites because of the south to north trajectory, and it passed through on the inside of "the ring".

Oh well.. They think that it may be on a collision course for 2080 now.  I have 67 years to wait for a closer look. :)  Now I just have to live to be 103 years old......
