Hey all plantaholics I need some advice. Helping my daughter set up a larger tank and the expenses have  stretched her budget. What is the minimum amount of gravel for low light plants to thrive. Tank is 30gal long -  36Lx12w. 20lb bag gives a good 1-11/2" help

Good old play sand from Home Depot is nice and cheap. I used two bags for my 38g cost me maybe 8$. Grew blyxxa, Amazon swords, dwarf sag, spiral Val's. All rooted very well and grew substantially with that mixed with CO2.

Depends on the type of plants you want to grow. Heavy root feeders do better in 3-4 inches of good substrate, plants like crypts, swords, etc. Others like stems don't require that depth.
