do you not think conditions like this would be traumatic to the fry and effect how they grow and how they act as adults if they make it that far?..I even wonder about barebottom tanks..with no privacy does this effect the mental growth of the fish?

Do you think it is better to be eaten? Are you sure in somebody's stomach they will mental stable

ambushman2j

why would they be eaten if there's substrate and rocks in the tank with no larger fish???

DARKPHREAK

Noticed another fry in the tank this morning so I took the whole thing down. Got the fry out and another female thats holding and put them in the 6g. She seems alot less stressed and curious about the the 1 inch fry and the 2 other 1/8 inch. Ill be watching her for the next few days to see when she spits. Its sad cause she hasnt eaten for a VERY long time thats how I netted her so easily, sunken belly and bland colours. Hopefully she drop them soon so I can move her back to the main tank and get her eating again.

Thanks to everyone for all the help.

Marc

You may want to strip the fry from the female so that she can start recovering.

There's a good article about how to strip mouthbrooders' fry at cichlidforum.com:
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/stripping_fry.php

DARKPHREAK

Thank you for that link. I've read through it before and I guess tonight if I can get some help from the person who wont allow me to get a few more tanks, we'll give it a try.

ambushman2j

personally I advice against stripping females, I read in another article and agree from personal experience that when you strip the female of the fry the fry are less durable and it can often ruin the females ability to properly hold fry in the future..I let nature take it's coarse and have never had a problem..the only time I would recommend stripping the female is if it was holding for way too long, 4+ weeks

And if it too young, to give her chance to grow.

I strongly disagree with this and would -love- to see evidence of this happening in the past.

ambushman2j

well, that would be rather difficult to prove, if you do find your fry has been raised with deformity it's then hard to link the deformity to the fact they were stripped.

Like I said, this is my opinion, I read it in an article and I beleive it's true.   You have your way, I have mine.

I suppose this could happen if the female was injured while the fry were being stripped but if done carefully the female shouldn't get injured.

ambushman2j

not nessessarily injured..more, the experience is traumatic to her..keeping in mind the fish has no idea your saving her babies, she just knows there's some giant sticking tooth picks where my babies are and holding me out of water where I cannot breath, taking my babies away from me..it's a known fact animals which go through traumatic experiences for example a pig living through a tornado..it causes them to stop growing.

DARKPHREAK

Well she spat all of them out herself. I had taken 2 from the main tank before moving her to the 6g. Now that shes in there shes let go of 6 more, with still a few more in her mouth. Ill wait 2 more days before putting her back in the main tank. Guess Ill have some fry to sell now...

ambushman2j

congrats!..are these the demasoni?

DARKPHREAK

Yup demasoni. The ones I netted from the main tank hide alot but the ones she spit are swimming near the top in the duckweed. They all eat crushed flake food, and I mean they eat ALOT. Just put the female back in the main tank cause she was eyeing the older fry and chasing it around. Hope everyone survives, there are 8 fry plus 2 that were dead when I got home.

  Amazing but true facts!

I can't say that this pig thing is a fact that I know.

Cool.  There's no doubt that the fish spitting them out herself is the best way.

ambushman2j

do you know why they were dead?

Yeah I saw a show on Discovery Channel during a show..I Think it was called Storm Warning..they showed a tornado ripping through a farm and these pigs were being sucked out of the barn and some were found 5-6 miles away, all of their pigs never grew again.

DARKPHREAK

I'm almost sure that the 2 that died were the ones I netted from the main tank. The spit ones are still doing fine.
