Hey

I was hoping that someone could shed some light, I am looking for black sandblasting sand.  Anyone know of someone in Ottawa that carries it?

Thanks

DARKPHREAK

I asked a local welding/paint shop about this stuff and was told its not sand but slag from Iron Works plants, byproduct of melted steel, so not totally sure if you'd want that.

Nah there is a true black sand used in sandblasting.  Will keep digging, there has to be some in Ottawa somewhere!

Carquest I just called, they don't carry sandblasting sand but if anyone is interested, it is located here:

Merkley Supply
100 Bayview Rd
728-2693

They have Black AND Silica, the price are:

Black Sand:      $7.00 / 50lb bag
Silica (White):  $6.25 / 40kg bag

What is silica?  Can it be used as a substrate in an aquarium?

Yes it can, PFS is considered a silica like sand.

I would like a nice black sand for my 55 gallon however which I think I am going to pick up.  Only issue is the place is only open until 5pm and doesn't look like Home Depot or Rona carry any black sands :(.

This may be a shot in the dark, but I'd try Artistic Landscape Design on Bank Street (near South Keys)... I've found them to have great selection of sand, stone, pondplants etc...

Good luck!

Do you know if the black sand is actually safe? I tried using some black sand blasting sand a while back and lets say, my ph got really screwed up. HCl had to be mixed in to get it right again.

I'd be interested in that sort of sand, but if there is a place that carries beige or white sand, that would be nice.
