I have used AquaSafe in the past as well.  I currently sell Seachem products and I will check what the price is for Seachem prime.  If anyone is interested in Seachem products PM me.

Thanks.

I have always used Stress Coat by Aquarium Pharmaceuticals without any issues.  Works great.

Wouldnt mind knowing a price on Prime though...

The Prime I have here is a 250ml bottle that cost me $14.99 at Big Als.. However, the dosage is one 5ml capful to 50 gallons. I was using 5ml of the Aqua Safe for only each 10 gallons, so Prime is more concentrated. It says "removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Converts ammonia into a safe non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tanks' bio-filter". Also it detoxifies nitrite and nitrate.

I do have a bottle of Stress Coat here, which says it removes chlorine and neutralizes chloramine. Then it says to use "Ammo-Lock to detoxify ammonia". So you need to use both products? Am I understanding that correctly?

What I'm wondering is if this and other products remove only the chlorine and chloramine, but leave the free ammonia that  results after neutralizing the chloramine?  This is what I was never clear on using the different water conditioners, but the Prime states it does remove that free ammonia.

I never had a problem using the Aqua Safe but decided after seeing threads recommending Prime to check it out. Maybe healthy fish can withstand a bit of the free ammonia (which should dissipate quickly), but tiny fry and a mom just recovering from a long holding period could not? I am assuming the lab was a recent mother?
Does anyone else know exactly what the different water conditioning  products do and dont do?

well the ammonia gets removed immediately by your filter.

is 1 cap / 50gallons the same as 1 drop per gallon?  the stuff I use is 1 drop per gallon.  and I have yet to see a better deal (aquarium pharmaceuticals large bottle for 18.99 I think)

Would the ammonia be removed in the case of where people arent using carbon in their filters? I know a lot of people prefer not to use carbon.
I'm pretty new too all of this so m trying to understand how these things work. :)

I don't think carbon would have anything to do with it, it's your bacteria colony that would remove the ammonia (ie sponge)

Bal

Oops, you're right, Drew. I should have thought of that, seeing I did a fishless cycle on my tank.

carbon removes metals and medications from the water

How come my post showed up as a new topic???  I didn't type in anything different in the title.

I split it,  the other thread was going off topic

There are a million products available, and very few you really need.  Just read labels to make sure you aren't buying two or three chemicals that do the same thing... for starters.... and ask the group about specific products.  There's lots of experience here!
