I know this is a bit late in the thread, but I posted this information to a Classified Ad from Rockgarden and thought followers of this thread could benefit also...

Here's a potential source of free 5 Gal pails. (sometimes with lids)

Check the bakeries in the local grocery stores.
They tend to get their icing and chocolate fondant in 5 gal pails. They usually just toss them, but If you speak to the Bakery Manager they might be willing to stock plie them for you if you can pick them up every couple of days. They have to worry about health inspectors, so they can't have them hanging around for long.
They are certified for food stuffs so they are safe for aquarium use. I've been using them for over a decade.
You will most likely need to clean them out once you get them home, but for free pails its worth it. (just becareful what you clean them with. Lots of hot water and vinegar is usually best.)

Also, you might even get luck at Tim Horton's too.

One more thing... Make sure you get freshly emptied pails. Sometimes they will use them themselves for cleaning, and once they put the industrial strength cleaners in them they are no good for fish.

Just food for thought.
Good Luck
