KLAUS STEINHAUS

BUILDING A FISHROOM & CARES FISH PRESERVATION

Klaus Steinhaus was born in Germany, starting his first aquarium in 1956 in which he kept guppies and platies. His interest turned to cichlids in 1967 and has specialized in African cichlids, while currently also keeping South American cichlids. He joined the German Cichlid Association (DCG) in the mid 1970s and became involved with a regional chapter where he started writing articles for their publication. He sold all his fish and equipment before moving to Canada, early 1980s.

After a short hiatus from the hobby, Klaus has since revitalized things with his 24-tank fish room. He joined the American Cichlid Association (ACA), contributing many articles and is currently involved as an official speaker for CARES (Conservation, Awareness, Recognition and Responsibility, Encouragement and Education, and Support and Sharing) Fish Prevention Program. His local club, Durham Region Aquarium Society (DRAS) is also the first club in Canada to receive official CARES certification.

The purpose of the CARES Preservation Program is to encourage hobbyists around the world to devote tank space to one or more species that are at risk and to distribute offspring to fellow hobbyists, while forming an information network where possible between aquarists, scientists, and conservationists.

Top 3 Reasons to join the Ottawa Valley Aquarium Society (OVAS)
REASON NUMBER 1
OVAS meetings are a great place to meet and socialize with other hobbyists, to compare notes, trade plants and fish, and to learn something new. OVAS members are a fine group of people who are happy to share their knowledge and experience. Whether you are new to the hobby or a seasoned expert, you will always find friendly faces who are more than happy to answer questions or help solve a problem. Our members include saltwater and freshwater enthusiasts, and we also have an ever-growing number of plant-oholics on board!
REASON NUMBER 2
You don’t need to be a member to attend meetings and events but you should consider joining anyway. Membership dues are what make auctions, speakers, seminars, meetings, etc., possible. Dues are only $20/year. OVAS also supports and encourages the hobby in various ways. Most recently, we have begun encouraging young people to enjoy the hobby through classroom tank donations made possbile through membership dues and OVAS sponsors.
REASON NUMBER 3
Members enjoy a 10% DISCOUNT at Big Al’s (East), Critter Jungle (West), La Niche & Moi (Gatineau), and at Ponds & Aquaria (Kinburn). For many of us, the 10% discount more than pays for the membership every year.
