March Meeting Cancelled

We regret to inform you that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, OVAS will be cancelling its meeting on March 23rd 2020.

Giant Auction in April???

The city of Ottawa has announced that they will close all their facilities starting on Monday, March 16th to Sunday, April 5th.  As many of you are aware, our annual Giant Auction was going to take place on Sunday, April 5th.  The OVAS Executive is currently in discussion and will decide if the event will be rescheduled or cancelled.  Please check the forum for the latest updates.

OVAS Bowl Show and Photo Contest for March

Even though the meeting for March is cancelled, OVAS will still continue to host its mini fish show called a “Bowl Show From Home”.  This months category is Oddball Fish.  We encourage all members to participate!

Oddball fish are normally striking because they are unusual, weird or strange in appearance.  These types of fish are not always easy to categorize as they often belong to a unique genus or species and have specialized care requirements as a result.  The participant has free reign on interpretation so please post your pictures of your oddball fish in a bowl and forum members will vote.  Some ideas are taking pictures of your bowls in front of another aquarium or computer screen, in front of a nice black or blue back drop, play with the lighting or window blinds.  Fish will be judged based on size, colour and overall appearance.

However, please do not go out and buy a fish for the show.  The intention is to display your successful aquatic husbandry for a chance at some prizes from our sponsors.

Please post your Oddball fish in the forum.

3 Reasons to become an ovas member

If you haven’t purchased a membership yet, here are 3 reasons why it’s worth doing!

Reason Number ONE
OVAS meetings are a great place to meet and socialize with other hobbyists, to compare notes, trade plants and fish, and to learn something new. OVAS members are a fine group of people who are happy to share their knowledge and experience. Whether you are new to the hobby or a seasoned expert, you will always find friendly faces who are more than happy to answer questions or help solve a problem. Our members include saltwater and freshwater enthusiasts, and we also have an ever-growing number of plantaholics on board!
Reason Number TWO
You don’t need to be a member to attend meetings and events but you should consider joining anyway. Membership dues are what make auctions, speakers, seminars, meetings, etc., possible. Dues are only $20/year. OVAS also supports and encourages the hobby in various ways. Most recently, we have begun encouraging young people to enjoy the hobby through classroom tank donations made possible through membership dues and OVAS sponsors.
Reason Number THREE
Members enjoy a 10% DISCOUNT at Big Al’s (East), Critter Jungle (West), La Niche & Moi (Gatineau), and at Ponds & Aquaria (Kinburn). For many of us, the 10% discount more than pays for the membership every year.
You can become a member by joining online or in-person at any OVAS meeting or event (cash only).
