about ovas
The Ottawa Valley Aquarium Society (OVAS) is a non-profit, educational & recreational organization. It’s a club for anyone who is interested in the aquatic hobby in the Greater Ottawa Area. Learn more . . .
OVAS members enjoy a 10% DISCOUNT from our sponsors AquaZen, Big Al’s Ottawa, Critter Jungle and La Niche & Moi. For many of us, the 10% discount more than pays for the membership every year.
ovas community
OVAS is more than just a website and an online forum, it is an active community that meets monthly for presentations and workshops and to talk about all things aquaria. OVAS members are a fine group of people who are happy to share their knowledge and experience. Whether you are new to the hobby or a seasoned expert, you will always find friendly faces who are more than happy to answer questions or help solve a problem. Our members include saltwater and freshwater enthusiasts, and we have an ever-growing number of plant-aholics!

monthly presentations & workshops
Each month, from September to May, OVAS holds a monthly meeting. These meetings include a presentation or workshop by one of our local members or from expert guest speakes & academics. Topics are wide ranging and we strive to offer a program that is of interest to local hobbyists. Attendance is open to members and non-members alike and admission is free! OVAS Members are encouraged to bring plants, fish, or used aquarium items to offer for sale or trade. These meetings are a great place to meet and socialize with other hobbyists, to compare notes, trade/sell plants and fish, and to learn something new.
Annual Giant Auction
An annual all-aquatic auction of fresh and saltwater fish, plants and invertebrates (corals, shrimp, molluscs), as well as dry goods (tanks & stands, driftwood, filters, etc.) that are new or used but in good condition. This annual auction is a major event on the OVAS calendar as it helps support the club to bring in speakers for our monthly presentations. Everyone is welcome to attend – you do not need to be an OVAS member to bid or sell. Just like our annual livestock auction, there are always great deals to be had. Whether beginner, intermediate or advanced aquarist, this year’s auction is the place to be to buy, sell, and socialize with fellow fish-keepers.
Annual Livestock Auction
Plants grow and propagate. Fish get bigger and multiply. Our minds add 20 gallons to our tanks when the LFS has a sale. When a friend offers us free aquatic life . . . we imagine our tanks double their actual size! For any one (or more) of these reasons, tanks get overstocked. The annual livestock auction is a great chance for hobbyists to cull their tanks, bag up fish, shrimp, and plants for auction. Whether begginer, intermediate, or advanced aquarist, the OVAS livestock auction is the place to for great deals and to socialize with fellow fish & aquatic plant keepers.
