I was just reading that article this morning, and noticed the electrician had suggested not putting the power bars on the floor. I assume that has something to do with protecting it against flooding in case there's a water leak??? That said I'll be double checking my tanks tonight to make sure all the powerbars are elevated. Also, the guy in the article spends $450/mth on hydro...yowza!

Yes, I thought the same thing about the power bars.  I am going to check a few of mine, too.  I wonder what would be considered "average" power usage?

bt

Yes - generally you wouldn't want them on the floor, and you want "drip loops" in the cord for anything plugged into them.

And GFCI, so if water still somehow gets to the power bar it trips the circuit.

Mine are all resting on the floor... got to fix that  :-[

Good news is that most of the power bars have that little hole in the back so it can be easily fixed by a tiny screw on the back of the stand and hang them there, VOILA!

Peekay

I wouldn't hang 'em on the back, on the exterior. I'd place them inside the stand so if your tank were to leak/rupture/break, the water would never get to the inside of the stand, and hang them at least two feet off the floor, and not near the canister filter and its output and input lines.

Trying to remember who it was that told me.....

The neighbours told them (aquarium owners) that their house was being watched so the aquarium owners went and invited the undercover cops over to see that the house was full of tanks not pot.

My stands are all open back so they're going to go on the frame of the stand. If there were a leak somehow, water will go both inside and out, probably following either the tubing and/or the seems (where the pieces join)  ;)

But let's not talk about leaks, that's bad luck LOL

I've got mine hung with those Command adhesive things...they work great and come off super easy if something needs to be moved!  They also make one that is great for routing wires and making sure you have loops in them to avoid water dripping in a power bar.
